God bless cheesy techno! It's my sole motivator for running when things start to wear down. Last week I started tootling along a path that follows a nearby river and loops around. I don't know how far the run is, maybe two miles. It's a good length because I'm miserable by the time I'm at the far point (especially in this 90 degree weather) and I have to push myself to get back home.

At the half-way point of the run my legs feel like they're going to fall off, 3/4 of the way through I think I'm going to die. The technical term for this is called "the wall." If you can run through that point, you'll get a second wind. If I keep pace with the high-energy techno when I feel like I'm going to conk out, everything works out and I can make the full run without any stops. JPop is good music for this sort of thing as well. Good stuff.

Went into Borders yesterday to dig through the graphic magazine section to see if the new bi-monthly Dynamic Graphics magazine had come out. It hadn't, but there was a glossy magazine with "I heart type" plastered on the front. Typography = win, $15.50 price tag = sad.

Since the magazine was pretty pricey so I decided to leaf through the article to see if it was worth the purchase. The type article starts off with the usual "type is everywhere but it doesn't get enough attention yada yada yada." The article had an illustration that labeled all the different parts of a character. All fine and good — I have a chart up on my cube wall at work with such information — but one of the characters looked strangely like Arial's awkward "R."

Here's the Arial "R", turn your head if you're squeamish:

Do not mistake hunger-induced delirium for aesthetic enjoyment, it's just the unbalanced feel of the "R"s leg.

Reading through the article, they actually suggested using Arial, the cheap dirty knockoff of Helvetica. This is a design magazine. I mean, come on.

Although the magazine did contain some interesting tidbits, I didn't buy it. I just can't financially support that sort of thing. So I saved myself $15.50. Rewarded myself today by going into Urban Outfitters and allowing myself a purchase of earrings for $16.34.

Typography sure is fun!

Yeah the Dymanic Graphics magazine is $8.50, and it has very few articles. It's good stuff though, and the next issue is going to be Web focused to boot!

Hey, haven't been here in a while.

A design magazine that recommends Arial shouldn't be calling itself as such. Usually they go for the more arty fonts. Thought I will give Arial credit as it is very readable. But Helvetica gets laid the most.

Also, design magazines are way too expensive. Don't they know that most artists are near broke? Or at least I am.
